PURPLE-THROATED MOUNTAIN-GEMHUMMINGBIRD This nectar-feeding mighty hummingbird gets its name from the iridescent purple color of the male's throat. Females have rich cinnamon bellies. Agile fliers, they can beat their wings very fast, producing a characteristic humming sound. They are able to hover and even fly backwards. Males are aggressive and dominant over other hummingbirds, and defend flowers in their feeding territories singing or chattering.
